Dez Vulcões

Ten Volcanoes leaves the Caldeira viewpoint and descends along the Capelo volcanic ridge to Capelinhos. Its start lies between 800 and 900 metres above sea level beside the great central crater. After using the short tunnel to view the Caldeira interior, the route follows part of the rim, then leaves the direction of Cabeço Gordo and heads west into a succession of cones and woodland.

The descent reaches a dirt road and briefly shares the Levada route toward Cabeço dos Trinta. A storage tank and tunnel access mark this area. Lower down, forest tracks lead to Cabeço do Fogo viewpoint, where native vegetation and open views reveal the eruptive alignment. The trail continues through woods, fields and pasture, passing Furna Ruim, Algar do Caldeirão and Cabeço do Canto.

After crossing the road, the scenery changes abruptly. Vegetation gives way to the ash and exposed forms of Capelinhos Volcano, created by the 1957–58 eruption. The walk ends at the interpretation-centre car park. Distance, accumulated descent and varied ground make this a hard route, but it provides a continuous reading of Faial's volcanism from the Caldeira to the island's youngest land.

Begin at the Caldeira viewpoint and use the tunnel only to see the crater, then return to its entrance. Climb the steps and follow the rim until the Cabeço Gordo route separates; turn west there toward Capelinhos. Descend to the dirt road and follow the section shared with Levada toward Cabeço dos Trinta. Pass the storage tank and continue on forest tracks to Cabeço do Fogo viewpoint. Remain with the markings past Furna Ruim, Algar do Caldeirão and Cabeço do Canto. Cross the road carefully and enter the ash field, following it to the Capelinhos interpretation-centre car park. Secure transport from the endpoint.
