Pico da Praia

The 8.9-kilometre Pico da Praia circuit is temporarily closed. It must not be entered from Ribeira da Praia or through lateral connections while that condition remains. The route occupies the southern slope of Serra de Água de Pau and was laid out to reveal the relationship among upland water systems, forest, pasture and valleys descending towards the coast.

It passes water-collection and conveyance structures, streams and remains of a former flax factory. The climb to the 598-metre Pico da Praia crosses pumice-rich ground and, when available, opens views towards the south coast and Vila Franca islet. Japanese cedar, eucalyptus, pasture and patches of native flora create a transitional landscape among forestry, agriculture and upland habitat.

The circuit has a connection with PR02SMI, but that link must not be used to bypass the closure. Its medium rating and estimated two and a half hours reflect climbing, moisture and service tracks. No reason is assumed for the present closure. Any future walk requires a reopening announcement, a new status check and confirmation that the entire loop—including hydraulic passages and junctions—has returned to use.

Do not enter PRC44SMI while it is closed. The circuit starts in the Ribeira da Praia area, passes hydraulic features and the former flax-factory area, then climbs through forest and pasture to Pico da Praia. It descends on another branch to rejoin the starting access, with a possible connection to PR02SMI. Only after reopening should direction, junctions and full continuity be confirmed; do not use the neighbouring trail to gain entry. The full 8.9-kilometre route remains closed; choose another open trail and reconsider this itinerary only after reopening has been expressly confirmed.
