About this place
Água d'Alto Beach, often called Praia Grande de Água d'Alto, extends for roughly 600 metres along the south coast of São Miguel. It is the largest sandy beach in Vila Franca do Campo municipality and lies beside the regional road near the former Bahia Palace Hotel. Volcanic sand and an open view of the sea create a broad landscape, but also expose the beach to changing swell and currents.
Bathing support and nearby businesses, including food service, are available, with parking close to the access points. Lifeguard supervision operates during the bathing season and should not be assumed year-round. Check flags before entering the water and follow lifeguard instructions. On busy days, park only in permitted places and take care when crossing or walking near the regional road. Opening times for bars, restaurants and other services must be confirmed with the individual operators.
