Lombo Gordo Beach
Lombo Gordo Beach in Nordeste has sands whose extent changes with sea currents and forms part of the Ponta do Arnel and Faial da Terra conservation area.
About this place
Lombo Gordo Beach lies in a bay on the north-eastern coast of São Miguel, enclosed by high green slopes. Road access descends along a winding route to the area by the sea. Sand and pebbles can shift with winter storms, tides and ocean movement, so the beach does not have the same appearance throughout the year. Its east-facing position brings the strongest light in the morning.
This is an isolated ocean beach where swell and currents may make entering the water dangerous. Recent municipal information indicates that permanent lifeguard cover should not be expected. Respect barriers, warnings and any access restrictions, especially after heavy rain or rough weather. Bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear, and take all rubbish away. The landscape can justify the visit even when sea conditions do not allow safe swimming; never infer safety from the presence of other visitors.
