Pico Bartolomeu Viewpoint
Pico Bartolomeu Viewpoint, at around 800 metres above sea level, provides far-reaching land and sea views, including Faial da Terra and Água Retorta.
About this place
Pico Bartolomeu Viewpoint occupies high ground in Nordeste municipality and is approached from the Pedreira area. A narrow dead-end road climbs through forest towards telecommunications antennas. On clear days, the elevation reveals São Miguel's eastern coast, parts of Nordeste and Povoação municipalities and successive inland ridges.
The site lies within the Pico da Vara–Ribeira do Guilherme Special Protection Area, important for the Azores bullfinch and native high-altitude vegetation. Stay on established tracks, do not disturb birds and never collect plants. Fog can arrive quickly and make driving and navigation difficult; avoid the ascent in poor conditions or fading light. There is no ticketing, formal timetable or guaranteed visitor service. Carry water, warm clothing and reliable navigation, and ensure that a parked vehicle does not obstruct technical access to the antennas or forest.
