The Azores Bullfinch Environmental Centre, located in Cancela do Cinzeiro Recreational Forest Reserve, introduces visitors to the Azores bullfinch and the native forest on which it depends. This bird is endemic to the Azores and restricted to eastern São Miguel. The exhibition explains the threats that reduced its habitat, restoration of Azorean laurel forest and conservation work developed since 2003.
The centre is also a starting point for learning about Serra da Tronqueira and Nordeste, with information on walks, birdwatching and educational activities. From May through September it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. From 15 February through April, and from October through 15 November, it opens weekends and public holidays from noon to 5:00 pm; visits on other days in those periods are by appointment.
