In Lajes das Flores, the visit moves at the pace of coast, mountain and village life. The town of Lajes provides the practical harbour side, with the port, marina and services by the Atlantic; Lomba, Fazenda, Lajedo and Mosteiro reveal a quieter rural scale of stone-walled pastures, narrow roads and fast-changing light. This is a place to move slowly through, because the landscape rarely shows itself all at once.

On the western coast, Fajãzinha and Fajã Grande hold some of Flores' most powerful scenery: high cliffs, wet greenery, waterfalls and small flat settlements pressed between rock and sea. Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, also known as Poço da Alagoinha, is the area's great natural amphitheatre, where waterfalls drop into a still lagoon. Near Fajã Grande, Poço do Bacalhau and the bathing area bring the day back to a simpler rhythm, with a seafront walk and a swim when the ocean is calm enough.

For walking, the Lajedo-Fajã Grande trail is the clearest continuous reading of the southwest: it starts in Lajedo, passes Mosteiro, opens views towards Rocha dos Bordões, drops towards Fajãzinha and finishes by the coast at Fajã Grande. For a shorter but intense outing, descend to Fajã de Lopo Vaz from its viewpoint, where the warm slope, small waterfalls, fields and boulder beach feel more remote. On both routes, expect damp ground, fog and trail conditions that can change.

Geology is central to the experience. Rocha dos Bordões, between Mosteiro and Lajedo, rises above the fields like a wall of basalt columns, changing mood with the hour and humidity. Fajã de Lopo Vaz shows another side of the island's making: platforms formed by cliff collapses, facing south and backed by high rock walls. These are photogenic places, but more importantly they are places that demand attention to terrain, wind and sea.

In Lajes, leave time for the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and for watching the harbour activity, which says a lot about daily life on this edge of Flores. As a base, Lajes is practical for arrivals, meals and maritime links; Fajã Grande and Fajãzinha put visitors close to waterfalls and the western coast; Lajedo and Mosteiro suit trail days and quiet roads. The key is not to overfill the itinerary: here, a clear morning can turn to mist quickly, and that change is often part of what makes the visit stay with you.
