Fajã Grande

In Fajã Grande, the Atlantic and the high green cliff feel unusually close to one another. The low seafront road, the houses around Ponta da Fajã and the stone-walled lanes create a distinct end-of-the-road mood, with broken volcanic shoreline on one side and Rocha da Fajã rising behind the village with water, shade and vegetation.

Poço do Bacalhau is the best-known stop and it rewards an unhurried visit. The waterfall drops into a natural pool where swimming is possible in suitable conditions. Even without going into the water, the setting is memorable: white water against dense greenery, the sound of the stream and the feeling of standing at the foot of the cliff. After rain, expect stronger flow and slippery ground.

Fajã Grande is also a natural start or finish for several of Flores' most scenic walks. PR03 comes down from the central plateau lakes toward Poço do Bacalhau, moving from crater and peatland scenery into the lava fajã by the sea. PR02 approaches along the southwest coast through Fajãzinha, with viewpoints over the fossil cliff, waterfalls and small pools. The Ponta Delgada connection is a hard, exposed route noted by official trail sources, so visitors should check current trail status before planning it.

Between walks, the bathing area, small harbour and quiet lanes are worth lingering over. Fajã Grande is not a place to rush: watch the open ocean, wait for late light on the western coast and take in the scale of Flores where village life, falling water and the Atlantic meet in one compact landscape.
