Fazenda

Fazenda das Lajes is a rural parish closely connected to the town of Lajes, but it has a distinct identity of its own. Houses follow the main road, fields open around them, and the place feels like a gentle transition between the island's southern urban centre and the agricultural landscape of Flores.

Fertile land and farming traditions still define Fazenda. Local history is tied to dairy cooperatives, agricultural services and a community life shaped by the fields, while remaining close to the services of Lajes. For visitors, it is a good place to understand the lived and worked island beyond the famous viewpoints.

The Church of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres is Fazenda's main heritage landmark. Built through local initiative from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century, it stands out for its central tower facade and revivalist woodwork inside. It is a modest but meaningful stop for understanding the community's independence and pride.

Among the parish's smaller natural points, Poço Redondo is worth noting. The parish authority describes it as a short and easy walk linked to freshwater bathing and an informal leisure area. As with many streams on Flores, any visit should be adapted to recent weather and water flow.

Fazenda also works as a natural stop between Lajes das Flores and the road north. Restaurants, small services and agricultural lanes make it practical, but its charm lies in the contrast between rural daily life, basalt walls and the nearby sea.

A visit here is best kept simple: step inside the church, walk a few local streets, look for Poço Redondo when conditions allow and notice how the parish extends from Lajes without losing its own character. The itinerary should remain focused on Fazenda das Lajes, excluding Fazenda de Santa Cruz and the attractions that belong to Lajes town or neighbouring parishes.
