Fajãzinha

Fajãzinha is one of the most atmospheric villages on the western side of Flores, set below wet green cliffs, pastureland and old stone walls. Arrival is best taken slowly: the houses appear first, then the sound of running water, and finally the sense of a small settlement placed inside a much larger landscape.

The village centre keeps an intimate scale, with Largo do Rossio, narrow lanes and the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios as its main heritage landmark. The church reflects the older importance of Fajãzinha on the west coast and gives visitors a natural starting point for a short walk through the village.

Ribeira Grande shapes the local rhythm. Along the walking route that crosses Fajãzinha, the old watermill and streamside paths show how water has long been part of work, movement and scenery here. After heavy rain, extra care is essential, because Flores streams can change character quickly.

Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, also known as Poço da Alagoinha or Lagoa das Patas, is the major natural sight associated with a visit to Fajãzinha. A footpath detour leads through dense vegetation to a dark lagoon below a green wall of waterfalls. It is one of Flores' most photographed places, but it rewards quiet, good footwear and respect for the damp terrain.

The protected landscape of the central zone and west-coast cliffs explains much of the parish's character. The old cliff line separates the fajãs from the higher interior and creates a sequence of waterfalls, pools and lush vegetation where Atlantic moisture is present in every stone. Fajãzinha is at its best when visited without rushing.

For travellers, the parish works best as a contemplative stop rather than a quick waypoint. Walk through the village, look across the fields below the cliff and leave time for the waterfall path, while keeping clearly separate the bathing areas and waterfall sites that belong to neighbouring Fajã Grande or other parishes.
