Sanguinho

The Sanguinho circuit leaves Faial da Terra to explore a valley where water, woodland and former settlement meet within 4.6 kilometres. The initial climb follows the stream among orchards and damp vegetation. Beyond a bridge, the path enters a more enclosed corridor, with running water and forest shade marking the approach towards Salto do Prego.

A signed branch leads to the waterfall, which drops into a pool enclosed by green walls. The main route also meets PR11SMI, a separate trail, before turning back towards Sanguinho. This small settlement developed on a roadless slope and retains houses, walls and cultivated parcels that recall a rural life dependent on footpaths. Its name is associated with the endemic buckthorn found in the surrounding vegetation.

The final section descends to Faial da Terra on a steep old stone lane, opening views across the village and valley orchards. Rated medium and taking about two hours, the loop combines the immediate appeal of a waterfall with a deeper account of mobility and rural abandonment. Visitors should respect both the stream habitat and the properties and buildings at Sanguinho, which are not an unused backdrop.

Leave central Faial da Terra on the marked bank of the stream and cross the bridge into woodland. At the junction, take the signed branch to Salto do Prego, then return along that branch to the main line. Check the code beside the PR11SMI connection and continue to Sanguinho village. Cross it on permitted paths and make the final descent on the old stone lane to re-enter Faial da Terra and complete the circuit. Allow about two hours to complete the 4.6-kilometre circuit and keep a margin of daylight, including time for signed branches and stops.
