About the route

The Lomba da Fazenda circuit covers 6 kilometres between the village centre, Ribeira do Guilherme valley and the Nordeste coast. From the church and garden, it descends towards the campsite and stream, where former watermills, a fountain and stone paths recall the use of flowing water. The crossing enters a more enclosed landscape before the trail begins gaining height again.

A connection approaches Nordeste town, but the main circuit continues towards Boca da Ribeira. The coast appears among cliffs, agricultural ground and recreation areas, including an old harbour that reflects a maritime connection predating modern access. At Pelado Endemic Park, Azorean plants are displayed in a space dedicated to local flora, linking the spontaneous vegetation of the slope with deliberate conservation and interpretation.

The return passes the Morgada area, wash tanks and paths leading back into the settlement. In about two and a half hours, this medium circuit brings together fresh water, coast, agriculture and community facilities. Its variety does not require great distance; it comes from rapid changes among stream, cliff, park and village. Although the loop finishes near its start, it demands care at water crossings and on segments shared with local traffic.

Directions

Begin beside Lomba da Fazenda church and descend through the garden towards the campsite and Ribeira do Guilherme. Cross the stream at the marked point, passing the mills and fountain, then climb towards Boca da Ribeira. Remain on the coastal circuit beside the former harbour and Pelado Endemic Park. Continue through Morgada, the old wash places and signed village streets to return to central Lomba da Fazenda. Ignore branches that do not carry the PRC31SMI code. Allow about two and a half hours to complete the 6-kilometre circuit and keep a margin of daylight, including time for signed branches and stops.

Safety

The Ribeira do Guilherme crossing may become unsafe after heavy rain or with high flow; never force it. Stone climbs, coastal areas and wash places retain moisture and can be slippery. Respect planted areas in the park, farm gates and the sea around the former harbour. Remain visible to traffic on village streets. Carry a charged phone and, in an emergency, call 112 with PRC31SMI and the number of the last route post seen.
