Água Retorta

Água Retorta sits on the south-eastern side of São Miguel, where the road enters a landscape of green ridges, walled pastures and open Atlantic views. It rewards slow travel: narrow streets, small gardens, worked fields and a clear edge-of-the-island feeling, while daily rural life remains close at hand. Even the name points to water twisting down the rock, an old image that fits the ravines, slopes and lanes that shape the place.

At the heart of the village, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França is the main heritage landmark. The present building was raised in the nineteenth century over the memory of an older hermitage, keeping the presence of the bell tower and the São Miguel character of dark basalt stonework against pale walls. The patron saint festival, traditionally held on the penultimate weekend of August, is still one of the moments when devotion and local social life bring extra movement to the streets.

The best way to understand Água Retorta is to walk its official circular trail, which starts by the church and shifts between road, rural shortcuts and farm tracks. The route crosses pastures, small woods of pittosporum and faya trees, boxwood hedges and the Fagundas area before returning to the village. Along the way there are views over the houses, a stream with a waterfall and the ruins of an old windmill once linked to grinding corn.

Above the parish, at Mato Simão, the Água Retorta Recreational Forest Reserve offers a cool break for picnics, barbecues, short strolls and shade. Its appeal is not only practical: endemic Azorean plants stand beside exotic trees, giving the place the feel of a forest garden. Near the road, the Miradouro de Água Retorta is a simple, worthwhile stop for reading the landscape: the village below, fields beyond it and the sea further out.

The coast reaches its most distinctive point at Fajã do Calhau, linked to Terra Chã and reached by a steep descent. It is a stony agricultural fajã tucked below high cliffs, with vineyards, summer houses and a mood quite different from the main village. It is also a sensitive place: seabird nesting value, protected-area status and geological recognition call for a quiet visit, careful attention to sea conditions and respect for access paths and private land.

Local culture is strongly felt at the table. The Água Retorta Gastronomic Fair and Casa do Povo initiatives have highlighted parish products and skills such as local cheese, homemade bread, massa sovada, sausages, jams, liqueurs, limpet bread stew, lacework, embroidery and small crafts. For visitors, Água Retorta works best as a place to linger rather than rush through: walk in the morning, eat without hurry, climb to the viewpoint and leave time for the fajã when weather and road conditions are favourable.
