Pico da Vara

The Pico da Vara circuit climbs to São Miguel’s highest point at 1,103 metres, crossing 7.3 kilometres of forest and protected mountain habitat. From the Forest Guard House in Atalhada Forest Reserve, the first section enters actively managed woodland. The contrast between plantations and native vegetation becomes more pronounced as the route gains altitude and approaches exposed upland ground.

Higher up, the path crosses areas important for endemic species and for conservation of the Azores bullfinch. Native cedar, heather, Azorean blueberry and other island plants form communities adapted to moisture, wind and the soils of the Nordeste massif. When cloud permits, the summit provides a broad reading of the eastern ridges, craters and both coasts. The ecosystem is as important to the experience as the altitude marker itself.

The return completes a difficult circuit expected to take about three hours. Gradient, mud, exposure and rapidly changing weather explain the rating more than any equipped passage. There is also a current operational condition: forestry work is taking place on the first segment, including tree cutting and heavy machinery movements. Walkers must obey all temporary signs and instructions and remain strictly on the route through the protected area.

Start beside the Atalhada Forest Guard House and follow the waymarks along forest roads and tracks, immediately observing instructions for the current works. At junctions, remain with the PRC07SMI code and continue uphill into the native vegetation zone. Reach Pico da Vara only on the signed branch, without creating shortcuts through protected habitat. Beyond the summit, complete the indicated circuit until it rejoins the forest section and returns to the Guard House. Allow about three hours to complete the 7.3-kilometre circuit and keep a margin of daylight, including time for signed branches and stops.
