Francisco de Lacerda Museum is in Calheta, built within the ruins of the former Marie d'Anjou canning factory on a steep slope overlooking the harbour. The regional administration acquired the building in 1984 for an ethnographic collection, which opened in 1991 as São Jorge Museum. Today's institution studies, preserves and shares the heritage of the island and its communities.
Collections explore São Jorge culture, classical and popular music, composer Francisco de Lacerda, local philharmonic bands and the canning industry. The complex also contains a documentation centre, auditorium, temporary exhibition room and indoor and outdoor leisure spaces. Opening hours vary between summer and winter, and the museum closes on Mondays. Guided visits, accessibility and temporary programming should be confirmed directly with the museum.
