Pico Alto

The Pico Alto circuit explores Santa Maria’s highest point and one of its most wooded areas. A short initial ascent reaches the summit, where views extend across the island when visibility allows. The remainder enters the forest, alternating steps, dirt paths, clearings and pockets of native vegetation. This cool, sheltered environment contrasts strongly with the island’s more open coastal landscapes.

Along the circuit, walkers gain a perspective over Caldeira and follow Alto Nascente, an old path associated with forestry work. A memorial recalls the air accident that occurred on this ridge in 1989, adding a reflective dimension to the walk. The itinerary offers a close view of the high ground’s value for Santa Maria’s biodiversity while remaining on the established path network. Natural viewpoints, cedar woodland and damp vegetation create changing light and occasional frames towards the west coast throughout the route.

Returning to the car park after the summit does not end the walk; it marks the beginning of a second, predominantly forested section. This structure gives the route unusual variety, combining altitude and broad views first, then a close encounter with woodland, its damp ground and the human history preserved along the old work path.

Begin at the Pico Alto car park and climb the steps to the summit. Return to the parking area, then enter the northbound forest path and follow the circuit through Caldeira, Casa da Guarda and Alto Nascente. Continue along the old forestry path, pass the memorial to the 1989 air accident and follow the waymarks back to the car park. Check the direction at links with the Grande Rota. After Casa da Guarda, keep to the Alto Nascente–memorial sequence to complete the circuit correctly.
