Formosa Beach

Praia Formosa, on Santa Maria's south coast, is distinguished by light-coloured limestone sand, a rare feature among the volcanic beaches of the Azores. Its sheltered bay and sandy shore make it one of the island's best-known bathing places. The colour of the beach reflects the limestone sediments associated with Santa Maria's distinctive geological history.

Nearby stand the ruins of São João Baptista Fort, also known as Castelo da Praia, built to defend this section of coast. The beach is also a waypoint and connection for walking routes, including the trail between Praia Formosa and São Lourenço Bay. Sea conditions and local safety information should be checked before swimming. Walkers should use suitable footwear, carry water and protect the classified natural areas crossed by the routes.
