Remédios

Remédios, officially Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, sits on the slopes above the town of Povoação and has a very local rhythm: two ridges, Lomba do Loução and Lomba do Alcaide, looking out over valley, pasture and sea. It is not a place to rush through. The pleasure is in taking the rural roads slowly, noticing low walls, small gardens, dairy cattle, scattered houses and sudden openings of view between bends in the road.

The two place names carry part of the story. Lomba do Loução is linked to João Loução, a figure associated with the early settlement of this part of São Miguel; Lomba do Alcaide recalls families connected with the old local alcaide office in Povoação. That past gives the parish a strongly rural identity. Wheat once mattered here, while today the landscape is mostly pasture and small-scale agricultural life.

In Lomba do Loução, the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is the main religious landmark. Devotion began with an older hermitage already recorded in the eighteenth century, and the present church took shape from the late nineteenth century onward. It is less a standalone monument than a community anchor. In Lomba do Alcaide, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit and the memory of Nossa Senhora da Bonança add another layer of local devotion, promises and feast traditions.

The main cultural stop for visitors is the Wheat Museum, set in the old mill area between Lomba do Alcaide and Lomba do Loução. The building preserves the memory of a time when stream water powered the machinery and grain passed through wheels, belts, threshing equipment and cleaning mechanisms. A visit gives useful context for Povoação’s cereal-growing past and reveals a rural side of São Miguel that is easy to miss on broader island itineraries.

For open views, Pico Longo Viewpoint and Pôr-do-Sol Viewpoint give two different readings of the parish. Pico Longo looks down toward the town of Povoação and the ridges that shape the valley. Pôr-do-Sol, in Lomba do Alcaide, feels more like a pause point, with picnic facilities and a horizon of pastures, slopes and coast. Alameda dos Plátanos changes the pace again: a tree-lined agricultural lane popular for photographs and short strolls, especially when the light filters through the plane trees.

The local feast calendar shows Remédios at its most lived-in. São João in June brings popular marches, music and community gatherings; Holy Spirit celebrations remain important in both ridges; São José is celebrated on the first weekend of May; and the patron feast of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios takes place on the third weekend of September. For visitors, Remédios works best as a calm half-day route: the Wheat Museum, the viewpoints, Alameda dos Plátanos and a careful drive or walk through both lombas, checking opening times before setting out and keeping agricultural roads clear.
