Cabouco

Cabouco is an inland pause for visitors who want to leave Lagoa's seafront for a while and see the São Miguel of narrow streets, stone walls, gardens, pastureland and small green pockets. It is close enough to the city to fit easily into a day out, but the feeling is rural and lived-in rather than coastal: the reward is local rhythm, roads rising toward the island's interior and open views appearing between houses, fields and farm lanes.

The main landmark is the Church of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia, Cabouco's parish church. The present three-nave building replaced an older hermitage linked to the early local settlement and was completed in the 19th century; its white facade and dark volcanic stonework give the centre of the village a very São Miguel character. The patron saint festivities in late September are one of the moments when Cabouco's community life is most visible.

Alongside that religious heritage, the Núcleo Museológico do Cabouco explains the work and domestic life that shaped the area. Set in a former rural house, it presents traditional trades such as stone quarrying, carpentry, shoemaking and barbering, together with objects from household and agricultural life. It is a short visit, but a useful one if you want the name Cabouco to mean more than a point on the map.

For an outdoor break, Fonte Velha Picnic Park is the clearest stop: tables, benches and barbecue facilities in a green setting, suited to a simple lunch or a rest between drives. This is not a place of famous signposted hikes or a formal viewpoint circuit; its appeal is the transitional landscape, with local roads climbing from the south coast into farming ground and hinting at the island's connection toward the north.

Cabouco works best as a slow detour rather than a checklist destination. Walk or drive through Rua da Igreja, notice the small square, the restored fountain, low houses, parish services, associations and everyday facilities, then continue along the inland roads without expecting a concentrated tourist strip. It is a good stop for understanding Lagoa beyond the sea and seeing how São Miguel remains inhabited, worked and crossed by old and new routes.
