Vigia de São Pedro

Vigia de São Pedro is a 6-kilometre coastal crossing between Poços de São Vicente, in São Vicente Ferreira, and the village of Calhetas. Starting beside the fishing harbour, it immediately reveals how closely these communities have depended on the Atlantic. Nearby remains of a former whaling factory recall an industry that once shaped both the economy and collective memory of São Miguel’s north coast.

The route alternates between rural lanes and settled areas. In Fenais da Luz, the church, viewpoint and traditional houses add a human scale to a landscape of pasture and sea cliffs. Farther east, Ponta de São Pedro reaches into the ocean and brings together a small chapel, the old whale lookout that gives the walk its name, and Buraco de São Pedro, a natural opening in the coastal ground. Changing viewpoints expose the irregular shoreline and the abrupt meeting of farmland and ocean.

The linear trail finishes beside the church in Calhetas after an easy walk of about two hours. Its modest distance carries an unusually varied story: compact fishing places, working farm approaches, religious architecture and observation points that reflect generations of life divided between land and sea.

Begin at Poços de São Vicente beside the fishing harbour and follow the signs east through São Vicente Ferreira. The route uses coastal lanes and rural approaches to reach Fenais da Luz, passing near the church and viewpoint. Continue towards Ponta de São Pedro, staying on the marked line beside the chapel and former whale lookout. The final section carries on to Calhetas and ends near the church. As this is a linear route, arrange transport back to the starting point before setting out. Allow about two hours for the 6-kilometre crossing and keep a margin of daylight to the finish, including time for signed branches and stops.
