Lagoa

Lagoa sits on the south coast of São Miguel, close to Ponta Delgada but with a character of its own: lower, more coastal and strongly shaped by old harbour life, farming and craft workshops. Its urban centre is best felt around Santa Cruz and Rosário, where streets slope towards the sea, churches and squares keep the memory of the old town, and Porto dos Carneiros still shows how closely Lagoa has always lived with the Atlantic.

A good visit starts on foot between Santa Cruz, Rosário and the waterfront. The remains and memory of Forte de Santa Cruz da Lagoa point back to the defence of the anchorage and Porto dos Carneiros, at a time when coastal settlements had to watch for pirates and privateers. At the Convent of Santo António, now linked to the Museu de Lagoa-Açores, the Tomaz Borba Vieira Municipal Library and the Historical Archive, the city reveals a quieter cultural side.

In Rosário, Cerâmica Vieira is one of Lagoa’s strongest identities. Founded in the mid-19th century and kept within the same family, it is described as the first ceramics factory in the Azores. The pieces are still shaped, fired and hand-painted on site, many with the cobalt-blue decoration associated with Louça da Lagoa. It feels like a working visit rather than a staged attraction: clay, wheel, kiln, shop and living craft.

The sea completes the day. The Municipal Pools of Lagoa, in Rosário, combine natural pools, swimming areas and useful facilities for an easy coastal break. Further east, Água de Pau and Caloura widen the experience with black-stone vineyard walls, a fishing harbour, clear water and fresh fish close to the shore. Lagoa works best as a mix of everyday town, discreet heritage, strong craft tradition and coves that invite a slow afternoon.
