Ribeira das Tainhas Beach

Ribeira das Tainhas Beach, officially listed as Calhau D'Areia Beach, is a small beach on the south coast of São Miguel Island, in the parish of Ribeira das Tainhas within the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo. Set between green slopes and volcanic rock formations, it offers a peaceful setting and a landscape typical of the Azorean coastline.

Approximately 100 metres long, the beach features a small stretch of fine sand alongside pebbles and dark volcanic rock. The contrast between the green hillsides, dark shoreline and blue Atlantic creates an especially scenic setting. Offshore rock formations and the shape of the small cove give the beach a secluded atmosphere despite its proximity to Vila Franca do Campo.

Access is via a stairway descending from Canada da Galega, beside a viewpoint and recreational area. Parking and a picnic area are available at the top, while the bathing area has changing facilities and toilets. The route involves a considerable number of steps, so access may be difficult for visitors with reduced mobility.

The beach is not supervised by lifeguards, so sea conditions should always be assessed carefully before swimming. When the ocean is calm, it is an appealing place for a swim, a quiet break by the coast or simply enjoying the Atlantic scenery. Its small scale and natural surroundings make it an attractive alternative to the busier beaches along São Miguel's southern coast.
