São Roque Beach

São Roque Beach is a small volcanic-sand beach on the south coast of Ponta Delgada, beside the urban centre of São Roque. Locally it is also known as Praia da Igreja or Praia do Poço. The sand lies in a bay next to the seafront, with views towards the São Roque islet and easy access from the coastal avenue.

Its urban position makes it straightforward to reach on foot or by car and easy to combine with a walk along the coast. It remains an ocean bathing place: swell, currents and the usable width of sand vary with tides and weather. Lifeguard cover and supporting equipment should be treated as seasonal rather than permanent. Check signs and beach flags before entering the water and follow lifeguard instructions whenever staff are present. This beach should not be confused with the larger Milícias Beach nearby.
