Milícias Beach

Milícias Beach, also known as Praia Grande, is one of the main volcanic-sand beaches on the south coast of São Miguel. It is in São Roque, a few kilometres from central Ponta Delgada, and continues the bathing coastline beside Pópulo. The long stretch of sand attracts swimmers, walkers and beach activities, although the usable width changes with the tide.

Access, parking and food businesses with terraces are available in the surrounding area. Lifeguard supervision operates during the bathing season, but services and equipment should not be assumed to remain available throughout the year. Always check flags and follow lifeguard instructions because swell and currents can change. Restaurant and bar opening times are independent of the beach and should be confirmed with each operator. Protect the coast by avoiding sensitive areas and taking all waste away when leaving.
