About this place

Viola Beach is an isolated beach on the north coast of São Miguel, beneath green cliffs in the Lomba da Maia area. Access is on foot and forms part of the waymarked PR27 SMI trail. Streams, waterfalls and the ruins of old watermills appear along the approach, preserving evidence of the agricultural and milling activity that once occupied this stretch of coast.

Sand and stones shift with tides and ocean movement. Lifeguards, food service, changing facilities and reliable communications should not be assumed; visitors must be self-sufficient and return by the trail. Wear hiking footwear, carry water and prepare for rapidly changing weather, and avoid the route during heavy rain or landslide warnings. Respect trail signs, property and built heritage. Even in summer, enter the sea only when conditions are clearly safe, because the absence of obvious breaking waves does not rule out currents.
