Pico do Carvão Viewpoint

Pico do Carvão Viewpoint provides a broad perspective over central and western São Miguel. From this elevated position, visitors can identify many volcanic cones shaping the landscape between the municipalities of Ponta Delgada and Ribeira Grande. In clear weather, parts of both the north and south coasts are visible, making this a particularly useful place for understanding the island's width and the way its volcanic relief organises the surrounding territory.

Nearby features include Pico do Boi, Pico das Éguas and Pico do Carvão itself, together with several small lakes in the Serra Devassa area. Clouds can move across this high ground quickly, so visibility may be reduced even when conditions elsewhere on the island appear settled. Wind and humidity reinforce the sense of altitude. Visitors should follow local signs, protect the vegetation and take particular care in wind, fog or rain.
