Vigia das Baleias Viewpoint

Vigia das Baleias Viewpoint occupies a coastal rise in Capelas, on the north coast of São Miguel. Its position provides a broad panorama over the town, cliffs, fields and Atlantic Ocean. The name recalls lookouts once used to locate whales, an activity connected with the whaling history of Capelas and its harbour during the first half of the twentieth century.

Today, the main interest is the landscape and the relationship between the settlement and the sea; whale sightings cannot be promised, and professional use of the structure should not be assumed. The site is exposed to wind and rapid weather changes. Use the available parking and viewing spaces, remain well back from cliff edges and do not obstruct access. There are no formal opening hours, but daylight gives better coastal views and safer movement around the site.
