Ponta do Escalvado Viewpoint
Viewpoint in Várzea, Ginetes, with views of Ponta da Ferraria, the Mosteiros islets, Lomba Grande, Lomba da Fonte, and the surrounding locality.
About this place
Ponta do Escalvado Viewpoint stands at the top of a sea cliff on the western coast of São Miguel. Its position overlooks the Mosteiros lava delta and the four islets rising offshore, while Ponta da Ferraria can be seen in the opposite direction. The volcanic origin of the island is especially clear here in the shape of coastal platforms, cliffs and rock formations exposed to the Atlantic.
A small building beside the viewpoint formerly served as a whale lookout, preserving evidence of the coastal observation network connected with the Azores' historic whaling activity. The site is highly exposed to wind and changing weather. Daylight visits are recommended, using the prepared visitor areas, keeping well back from cliff edges and checking visibility before travelling, particularly in fog or rain.
