Mosteiros Beach
Mosteiros Beach is a small beach with dark volcanic sand and warm, translucent water, offering good access as well as parking and toilet facilities.
About this place
Mosteiros Beach lies in a bay of dark volcanic sand on the western coast of São Miguel. Offshore, the Mosteiros islets form the parish's defining landscape and make this one of the island's best-known places to watch the sunset. It is an ocean beach exposed to Atlantic swell, so sea conditions can change quickly even when the bay initially appears calm.
Access is through the lower part of Mosteiros, with supporting facilities in the surrounding area, including parking and places to eat and drink. Lifeguard cover and other services are seasonal; visitors should follow posted signs, beach flags and lifeguard instructions whenever staff are present. Outside the official bathing season, supervision must not be assumed. Current hours for nearby bars and services should be checked locally.
