Ponta da Ferraria Viewpoint
Ponta da Ferraria Viewpoint, also called Ilha Sabrina Viewpoint, overlooks Ferraria, its lighthouse and part of the surrounding regional natural monument.
About this place
Ponta da Ferraria Viewpoint, also known as the Ilha Sabrina Viewpoint, looks down on the western end of São Miguel. From here it is possible to identify Ferraria Lighthouse, lava flows within the Pico das Camarinhas–Ponta da Ferraria Regional Natural Monument and the coast containing the natural pool influenced by hydrothermal springs.
The Ilha Sabrina name recalls a small island created by a submarine eruption in 1811 and soon destroyed by marine erosion. The viewpoint and Ferraria bathing area are separate places: reaching the sea requires following the dedicated descending road. Strong wind, fog and wet surfaces demand care both at the viewpoint and on the road. The landscape has no formal timetable; visit in daylight, remain within protected areas and respect any temporary closure caused by weather, road or sea conditions.
