Reducing gaps in healthcare access is key to protecting babies in the Azores

Infant mortality has been following a downward trend in the Azores. The region currently ranks fifth nationally, according to figures presented at a training session for healthcare professionals.

The meeting was held at Ponta Delgada Hospital and focused on prevention. Although the indicators have improved, continued attention is needed for the circumstances that can affect the health of mothers and newborns.

Paediatrician Joana Rosa identified smoking as one of the factors that still requires action. Prevention and support throughout pregnancy remain important parts of that work.

Access to healthcare on every island was also highlighted as a decisive issue. In a geographically dispersed archipelago, timely services close to families remain essential to sustaining progress and narrowing territorial inequalities.
