Santa Maria targets lower diesel use for electricity in 2027

EDA expects Santa Maria to save 1.3 million litres of diesel in 2027. Figueiral wind farm is already supplying electricity as final testing continues.

Reducing diesel consumption for electricity generation on Santa Maria is a key expected outcome of the Figueiral wind farm upgrade. EDA estimates that the installation could save around 1.3 million litres in 2027 once it is fully operational.

The farm is already supplying the grid, although testing and adjustments to its operating and monitoring systems continue. EDA Renováveis financed the work from its own funds, according to [Açoriano Oriental]().

Each of the three new ENERCON E44 turbines has a capacity of 900 kW. They also provide technical support during grid disturbances. EDA forecasts that wind power will account for approximately 21% of the island’s electricity generation in 2027.

The company also intends to install lithium batteries to accommodate more renewable generation, although this remains a future step. For Santa Maria, the project combines lower fuel consumption with support for a more stable electricity supply, reflecting the objectives reported by [Diário dos Açores](https://diariodosacores.pt/2026/10/24/parque-eolico-do-figueiral-entra-em-fase-final-de-ensaios-com-nova-geracao-de-aerogeradores/).
