Praia do Almoxarife

Praia do Almoxarife is the Faial parish where village life meets one of the island's most recognisable sandy beaches. Dark volcanic sand, green slopes and an open view towards Pico give the place an immediate presence, whether you come for swimming or for a quiet walk outside the bathing season.

The bathing area has the practical support visitors expect: changing facilities, seasonal surveillance, Blue Flag recognition, access points and nearby places to eat. Before entering the sea, always check the beach flags and local signs, as Atlantic conditions can change quickly even on inviting days.

The setting is not only about swimming. The parish is crossed by Ribeira da Praia and framed by the slopes of Espalamaca and Lomba dos Frades, creating a green amphitheatre that drops towards the bay. Avenida Unânime Praiense is the easiest line to follow for a seafront walk before returning to local cafés and restaurants.

In the village, Nossa Senhora da Graça Church carries the strongest religious memory. Documented in the sixteenth century, rebuilt in the eighteenth and repaired after the 1998 earthquake, it remains tied to the patron saint festivities and to the devotion of Senhor Santo Cristo da Praia.

For a different perspective, head up to Miradouro da Ladeira da Praia or look for Poço das Asas, both listed locally as places to visit. They are short stops, but useful ones for understanding how the village, stream, beach and Pico channel fit together.

Praia do Almoxarife works best with unhurried time: a beach morning, a simple lunch, a short walk and a late afternoon facing the sea. Although close to Horta, it has its own identity, balanced between bathing area, rural parish and a community actively caring for its coastline.
