Pedro Miguel

Pedro Miguel has a quiet rural character, shaped by the valley between Lomba dos Frades and Lomba Grande, by pastureland, farm tracks and the Ribeira de Pedro Miguel. It is a parish to visit slowly, with less hurry and more attention to landscape, texture and local life.

Its history preserves early settlement traces, names linked to Flemish influence and a strong devotion to Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. The parish church was one of the most visible scars of the 1998 earthquake; the new church, inaugurated in 2023, now stands as a powerful sign of community recovery.

The landscape becomes easier to read through the Pedro Miguel Graben, one of Faial's major tectonic structures. Its stepped relief and fault scarps explain the shape of the land and add a rare geological dimension to a visit, especially when Pedro Miguel is seen as part of the older eastern side of the island.

At the Charcos de Pedro Miguel, the experience becomes more intimate. This wetland at the southern base of Lomba Grande is important for migratory birds, including ducks and egrets. The best period is usually from September to April; in summer the ponds can dry out, so visit with realistic expectations and keep the place quiet.

Higher in the parish, the Pedro Miguel centre of the Faial Botanic Garden focuses on conserving habitats and species of Azorean flora, especially those linked to humid laurel forest. Even when access conditions should be checked in advance, the centre gives useful context to the parish's natural value and Faial's role in Macaronesian plant conservation.

Walkers using official trails will find a relevant connection on Caminhos Velhos, which passes the ponds before continuing into Faial's interior. Plan Pedro Miguel as a nature-and-village stop: church, rural lanes, birdwatching and a calm pause away from the island's busier beach areas.
