Lagoa do Cerro

Lagoa do Cerro explores the Altares uplands above 500 metres, alternating forest tracks, pasture and pockets of native vegetation. The circuit begins near artificial reservoirs and climbs between lines of cedar. From the high point at roughly 650 metres, clear weather opens views towards the north coast and landforms such as Picos Vermelhos and Narião.

The ecological focus of the walk is Lagoa do Cerro, a wetland surrounded by vegetation and visited by birds. An observation structure makes it possible to watch this habitat without entering its sensitive margins. The contrast between constructed reservoirs, high pasture and the natural lagoon illustrates the importance of water retention on the plateau. Although the circuit is short, exposure to upland weather and repeated transitions between forest and open ground give it a mountain character. The return closes the loop through the same high landscapes above Altares.

The observation structure indicates how to remain beside the lagoon without entering its habitat. From this point, water, plants and birdlife can be viewed as one system before the route returns to the more open landscape around the reservoirs. The contrast reinforces the different roles of natural wetland and constructed storage.

Start beside the artificial reservoirs in the Altares uplands and follow tracks bordered by cedar. Climb through pasture and forest to the high point, where clear days reveal the north coast, Picos Vermelhos and Narião. Descend towards Lagoa do Cerro and use the bird observation structure without leaving the path. Continue on the circuit waymarks until returning to the initial reservoirs. After the observation structure, take the circuit branch that returns directly towards the artificial reservoirs.
