Quatro Ribeiras

Quatro Ribeiras sits on Terceira’s north coast, where the road runs close to cliffs, short valleys and dark lava bays. It is a quiet stop, better suited to watching the Atlantic, swimming when the sea allows and understanding the old link between streams, mills and settlement than to rushing through a checklist.

The road down Caminho do Mar leads to the Quatro Ribeiras Bathing Site, the main draw for visitors who come to swim. Set among volcanic rock and open sea, it has a natural pool, sunbathing area, changing facilities, a bar and parking; in the 2026 bathing season, the municipality marked the site with a Blue Flag, an annual award tied to environmental quality, safety and services.

The surrounding shore is central to the visit. Costa das Quatro Ribeiras is recognised by Terceira Nature Park for its sea cliffs, hanging valleys, small bays, reefs, semi-submerged caves and volcanic formations from a relatively recent phase of the island’s geological history. When the sea is rough, the best plan may be to stay on land, watch seasonal waterfalls on the slopes and notice the coastal plants shaped by salt and wind.

For a clear reading of the landscape, Miradouro dos Moinhos is a short and worthwhile stop. From the viewpoint you can see the high northern coastline, the bathing area below and the ravines that explain why water shaped daily life here. It is also a good place to judge whether to go down to the sea or save the swim for calmer conditions.

In the village centre, the Church of Santa Beatriz adds a historic layer to Quatro Ribeiras. Linked to the early settlement of Terceira and listed as a heritage building of public interest, it carries the memory of both devotion and the island’s seismic past. Nearby, the Império do Espírito Santo das Quatro Ribeiras keeps the Holy Spirit tradition alive, especially around Pentecost and Trinity Sunday.

Water also appears in the working heritage of the parish: the Water Mill of Caminho do Mar is identified as a municipal heritage asset, recalling the milling of grain along the streams that run toward the bay. Quatro Ribeiras is best visited slowly, combining the viewpoint, church, império and natural pools while respecting sea warnings and the protected coastal habitats.
