Serreta

Serreta occupies the western edge of Terceira, where the island seems to narrow between green slopes, wind, woodland and cliffs open to the Atlantic. A visit has two very different moods: the quiet devotion of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres and the wilder energy of the northwest coast, with Graciosa appearing on the horizon when visibility is good.

The Diocesan Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres is the spiritual and emotional centre of the parish. In September, the Serreta pilgrimage brings many people walking through the night or early morning toward the church, keeping one of Terceira’s strongest devotions alive. Outside those dates, the place has its own calm: the church, square and nearby streets invite a respectful pause, even for visitors arriving without religious intent.

In the same nucleus, the Holy Spirit império of Serreta adds the community layer to the religious setting. Located by the church square, it is tied to festivities, promises, food sharing and family memory. The closeness of sanctuary and império shows how Serreta brings formal devotion and popular tradition together on a small but intense scale.

Mata da Serreta changes the atmosphere. This forest recreation reserve is one of the best places in the parish for a shaded break, with paths, rest areas, a children’s playground, shelter and vegetation including eucalyptus, pine, tree ferns and metrosideros. It is a cooler, more inland Serreta, especially welcome when the coast is windy.

For walking, the official PRC3TER Serreta route enters protected landscapes linked to Serra de Santa Bárbara and Mistérios Negros, starting from Canada da Fonte and moving through woodland, altitude and humid ground. Lagoinha and the dense vegetation sections give the route a volcanic interior feel. Check the trail status before setting out and wear proper footwear, as the path can become slippery after rain.

By the sea, Ponta do Queimado, also known as Ponta da Serreta, is the parish’s great Atlantic ending. The Serreta lighthouse has marked the cliff since the early twentieth century, though the current structure reflects earthquake damage and later adaptations. The Farol da Serreta and Ponta da Serreta viewpoints open onto cliffs, lava fields colonised by coastal heather, seabirds and, on clear days, Graciosa island.

Serreta rewards a slow visit: begin at the sanctuary, stop by the império, enter the forest reserve and finish by the lighthouse or Ponta da Serreta in late afternoon. It is small on the map, but dense in meaning: pilgrimage, woodland, volcano, open sea and a strong end-of-island feeling that sets it apart from the rest of Terceira.
