São Mateus da Calheta

São Mateus da Calheta is a seafront village on Terceira’s south coast, shaped by fishing rather than by postcard stillness. Its name points back to the small sheltered cove that helped the settlement grow, and that maritime character is still visible around the harbour, the waterfront lanes and the local tables where fresh fish is part of daily life.

The fishing harbour is the most active place to begin. Walk the quay slowly, watch the boats, the landing area and the shore work, while keeping clear of the people doing their job. For visitors, it is one of the clearest places on the island to understand Terceira’s working relationship with the Atlantic.

Beside the harbour, the Casa dos Botes Baleeiros preserves an important part of local memory. Its whaleboats and launch recall the period when whaling was part of São Mateus and Negrito’s economy. Today the subject is best approached as cultural heritage: demanding, sea-bound and deeply rooted in Azorean island life.

The village’s religious history is divided between two landmarks. The Igreja Velha, on Ponta de São Mateus, remains as a coastal ruin after the damage caused by the 1893 storm, with the ocean close enough to explain both its beauty and its vulnerability. Further inland, the newer Church of São Mateus da Calheta, built by the community after that event, anchors the centre of the village with two towers visible from several points along the coast.

West of the main village lies Negrito, one of the most appealing bathing areas on this stretch of Terceira. Its flat-bottomed bay, basalt slabs and sea accesses make it attractive on calm days, while the Forte do Negrito adds historical depth to the swim. In a compact setting, the place brings together coastal defence, whaling memory and summer bathing.

In Cantinho, the higher and more rural part of São Mateus, Quinta do Martelo reveals another side of the village. Its ethnographic setting and traditional food help visitors read Terceira through old houses, rural work, local produce and everyday customs, balancing the maritime atmosphere of the harbour and Negrito.

São Mateus da Calheta works well as a half-day visit, with room to stay longer. The harbour, Casa dos Botes, Igreja Velha, newer parish church and Negrito create a short, coherent route. By late afternoon, the village offers one of Terceira’s most vivid coastal scenes: boats, basalt, fresh fish and a strong local identity.
