Monte Brasil

The Monte Brasil circuit brings geology, nature and history together beside central Angra do Heroísmo. From Relvão, the route passes through the arcade of Fortaleza de São João Baptista and by the chapel of Santo António. The climb to Pico do Facho, formerly a signalling point, opens views across the city, bay and south coast, revealing the strategic position of this volcanic peninsula.

The path follows the caldera and approaches Forte da Quebrada before reaching an interior road. A spur leads to the whale lookout and a former Second World War station. Pico das Cruzinhas contains traces of anti-aircraft positions and a monument connected with the island’s settlement. Returning to the fortress completes a circuit where military structures are integrated with woodland, slopes and viewpoints. Its urban proximity does not diminish the walk’s variety, which moves between fortified heritage, maritime memory and wide perspectives over Angra.

The caldera is a reminder that the entire defensive complex occupies an old volcanic landform. Seeing crater, walls and city within the same walk is one of the circuit’s defining qualities and explains why Monte Brasil offers such a concentrated reading of Angra, its sheltered bay and the high ground selected for surveillance.

Leave Relvão, pass through the arcade of Fortaleza de São João Baptista and continue by the Santo António chapel to Pico do Facho. Follow the caldera, pass Forte da Quebrada and reach the road. Use the signed spur to the whale lookout and wartime station, then return to the circuit. Continue to Pico das Cruzinhas and descend through the fortress to Relvão. At Pico das Cruzinhas, take the marked descent to rejoin the fortress and return to Relvão.
