Altares shows a rural, Atlantic side of Terceira: open pastures, old lanes, whitewashed houses and a high coastline where the ocean suddenly appears between stone walls. It is a place for travellers who prefer the quieter roads of the island, with time to notice the bond between fields, streams and sea cliffs.

The historic heart of the village sits by the Parish Church of São Roque dos Altares, the main religious and visual landmark of the community. Around Patim, Rua Nova, Canada das Cales and Canada dos Engenhos, the scale of local life becomes clear: a settlement shaped by stream valleys, farming work and the gradual shift from older crops to dairy pasture.

The cultural heritage is modest in scale but easy to read. The Império do Espírito Santo dos Altares reflects one of Terceira’s strongest traditions, with crowns, communal meals and a local history of devotion and once-divided brotherhoods. Nearby, the Ethnographic Museum of Altares keeps agricultural tools and rural objects that help visitors understand everyday work before modern machinery.

Altares is also worth exploring through small details: old fountains, communal stone basins, wayside religious markers and memories of traditional tile-making around Fonseca and Canada do Laranjo. These features give depth to a slow walk, especially for visitors who pay attention to lane names, stone walls and the way the village gradually opens into pasture.

Pico Matias Simão is the parish’s strongest landscape marker. From its summit area and approaches, the north coast, fields and Atlantic come into view; local memory also links it to an old whale-watching lookout connected with the Biscoitos whaling coast. Canada do Pico and Ribeira da Luz make this one of the best places to understand Altares as a coastal rural landscape.

Higher inland, Lagoa do Negro and Lagoa do Cerro bring a different mood: wet ground, cryptomeria woodland, aquatic vegetation and the feeling of volcanic interior rather than open seafront. The Lagoa do Negro area is also a practical reference point for Gruta do Natal and the official Mistérios Negros trailhead, though the walking route then continues through a wider protected landscape of Terceira.

Altares works best as an unhurried visit: arrive by the regional road, stop by the church and Holy Spirit chapel, continue to Pico Matias Simão, check the museum when open and leave time for the Lagoa do Negro area. To round out the day, local food leans toward island beef and rural produce, matching the direct, understated character of this northwestern corner of Terceira.
