Sete Cidades

Arriving in Sete Cidades is one of São Miguel's defining experiences: the road drops into a closed volcanic basin where white houses, hydrangeas, pasture and water share the same scene. It deserves more than a quick photo stop. After the first view over the Blue and Green Lakes, the visit becomes richer at water level, where the valley feels quieter and the village sits close to the shore.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades is made of two broad bodies of water known as Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. The visual divide is easiest to feel near Ponte dos Regos, where lakeside paths move between the Blue Lake shore, the western side of the Green Lake and small corners such as Baía do Sossego. The colours shift with the sky, so low cloud does not ruin the experience; it gives the place a slower, softer mood.

The legend of the shepherd and the princess still belongs to the landscape, but Sete Cidades is not only a mythic postcard. In the village centre, São Nicolau Church stands at the end of a cryptomeria-lined approach and gives the valley a human scale. Nearby, Casa Grande and its picturesque garden recall a nineteenth-century summer retreat, while the fountains on Rua da Igreja and Rua da Queiró point to the old importance of water in village life.

On the western shore of Lagoa Azul, the Lagoa das Sete Cidades Environmental Complex is a useful first stop before walking, cycling or lingering by the water. It explains the geology, plants, wildlife and water resources of the basin, and it is part of the lake-margin improvement project. For visitors without a guide, it helps make clear that this landscape is not just scenic; it is fragile and actively managed.

Up on the rim, Vista do Rei is best understood as an official viewpoint and approach to the Sete Cidades caldera, not as a substitute for visiting the village itself. It is the starting point of PR03, which follows the Sete Cidades ridges, opens wide views over the lakes, and descends by Arrebentões to Lagoa Azul, Casa do Parque and São Nicolau Church.

Another official route, PR04 Mata do Canário - Sete Cidades, reaches the parish from the high ridge and also finishes in the village. It is one of the clearest ways to understand the caldera's scale: Lagoa Azul lies below, Lagoa Verde appears in contrast, and Lagoa de Santiago and Lagoa Rasa come into view from parts of the route. In damp weather, the descent calls for proper footwear and unhurried timing.

Sete Cidades also works beautifully at a gentler pace. The sheltered lake waters suit canoeing, kayaking and SUP, while cycling routes follow the shore, cross Ponte dos Regos and can continue towards the picnic area near the tunnel. Because the lake sits within a protected landscape, a Ramsar site and a geosite, the best visit is careful: stay on marked paths, respect sensitive lake edges and let the village keep its quiet rhythm.
