About this place

Baixa d'Areia is a small beach of fine volcanic sand on the south coast of São Miguel, in Lagoa municipality. Its shore sits in a cove sheltered by cliffs and vegetation and has a more intimate scale than the island's long beaches. It should not be confused with the Caloura bathing area beside the fishing harbour, which is a separate place.

Parking, toilets and lifeguard supervision during the bathing season are available. Services are seasonal and their availability should be checked locally. Access is not adapted for visitors with reduced mobility. Check flags before entering the water and keep away from cliffs, particularly after rain or strong wind. Lifeguard presence must not be assumed outside the official season, and all posted restrictions should be respected.
