Pico do Ferro Viewpoint
Viewpoint at around 570 metres in Furnas, offering broad views over the volcanic crater, Furnas Lagoon, the valley, and the surrounding mountains.
About this place
Pico do Ferro Viewpoint occupies a high position above the Furnas valley and offers one of the clearest overall readings of this volcanic landscape. From the platform, visitors can see Furnas village, the lake, fumarole areas and the slopes defining the broad volcanic depression. The view reveals how closely the settlement, geothermal features, farmland and wooded hillsides are connected within the same caldera landscape.
The viewpoint is also linked to the walking route between Grená and Pico do Ferro. Along that trail, different perspectives open over the lake and the geothermal cooking area where Furnas stew is prepared underground. Santa Maria may be visible in the distance on exceptionally clear days. Fog and low cloud can reduce visibility quickly, so visitors should use suitable footwear and check road, trail and weather conditions before setting out.
