Cintrão Viewpoint

Cintrão Viewpoint overlooks one of the most indented sections of São Miguel's north coast. The headland forms part of a protected area covering about 25 hectares and associated with the Fogo volcanic complex. The landscape shows trachytic lava domes, cliffs, inlets and coastal caves shaped by long-term marine erosion, making this a useful place to understand the relationship between volcanic geology and the Atlantic Ocean.

The cliffs and cavities are also important for seabirds. During the breeding season, species including Cory's shearwater and Barolo shearwater may be seen or heard, but nesting areas must not be disturbed and visitors should remain on established access routes. Wind exposure and steep cliffs require caution; binoculars are useful, and wildlife should always be watched quietly from a distance without directing lights towards birds.
