Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre

Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre welcomes visitors to Caldeira Velha Natural Monument, a landscape of dense vegetation, warm springs and geothermal features. Its exhibition explains the volcanic origin of the Azores, the formation of Fogo Volcano and the biodiversity, geodiversity, geothermal activity and thermal waters of this protected area. The building was designed around the existing plants and rock formations.

The natural monument contains four thermal pools. Facilities also include a ticket office, lockers, changing rooms, accessible toilets and parking. Entry is organised in 1.5-hour slots and capacity is limited, so advance purchase can be useful. Water conditions, paths and operation are influenced by the natural environment, and management may close the site when weather makes access or bathing unsafe.
