Madalena

Madalena is Pico’s natural sea gateway. Ferries arrive at the João Quaresma terminal and the first view already explains the place: the Faial-Pico Channel in front of town, Faial across the water, the Madalena islets offshore and Mount Pico rising behind the streets. It is an easy base for a slow arrival, with a harbour walk, sea-facing cafes, the church of Santa Maria Madalena and constant contrasts between black basalt, blue water and vineyard green.

South of town, the municipality opens into the vineyard landscape that made Pico a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO highlights Criação Velha and Santa Luzia as emblematic areas; on the Madalena side, Criação Velha, Candelária and Areia Larga are the places to read the pattern of currais, the small basalt-walled plots that protect vines from wind and salt spray. The PR05PIC Vinhas da Criação Velha trail is the best low-impact route through this scenery, linking Porto do Calhau and Areia Larga past tide wells, cellar buildings, wheel ruts, Moinho do Frade and the bathing area of Laja das Rosas.

Wine is more than a backdrop here. The Wine Museum in Madalena explains Pico’s winemaking history and the Verdelho cycle, while cellars and producers in Bandeiras and other villages turn the volcanic landscape into something you can taste. For a different layer of the same geology, book Gruta das Torres in Criação Velha: Portugal’s largest lava tube, visited with equipment and a guide along part of its natural galleries.

The coast is rugged rather than beachy. Around the town, Areia Funda and nearby natural pools offer open-sea bathing with views across to Faial; farther south, São Mateus and São Caetano feel quieter, with small harbours, religious festivities, lava shoreline and vineyards close to the road. Candelária is both a wine village and the way up toward the mountain flank, so it works well in the same day as the vineyard trail.

For Mount Pico, the official starting point is Casa da Montanha in Candelária, where climbs are registered and conditions checked. Even without climbing, the drive is worthwhile on a clear day for the panorama over Madalena, the western coast and Faial. The municipality is at its best when treated as a sequence: arrive by ferry, walk the stone-walled vineyards, go underground in lava, swim from black rock, then let sunset settle over the channel.
