2014 housing contracts leave path to homeownership unresolved in the Azores
Dozens of families in the Azores still cannot buy homes covered by purchase-option contracts signed in 2014, according to a report by RTP Açores.
More than a decade after signing subletting contracts with an option to buy, dozens of families in the Azores remain unable to purchase the homes. RTP Açores reported the situation on 20 October, examining one family's case on São Miguel.
The contracts were signed in 2014 by the Regional Government, which was then led by the Socialist Party. The properties belong to the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation, meaning the arrangement involves both the regional authority that signed the contracts and the public institute that owns the homes.
For the households concerned, the potential move from subletting to ownership remains unresolved. Their situation highlights a housing access issue in the Azores: a contractual purchase option has yet to become an effective opportunity for these beneficiaries to buy the properties. The published information provides no timetable for resolving the impasse.
