50 Years of Contemporary Art in the Azores

When

July 7 – December 30, 2026

From 7 July to 30 December 2026, Arquipélago – Contemporary Arts Centre in Ribeira Grande hosts a documentary exhibition examining fifty years of contemporary art in the Azores.

The exhibition draws together references from the development of this artistic field across the archipelago, including galleries, exhibition venues, publications and artists. Taken together, these materials reveal some of the connections and moments that brought Azorean contemporary practice into view.

Its perspective extends beyond individual works and makers to the means through which art travelled and was shared. Printed material, cultural spaces and other records provide entry points into distinct chapters of this recent history.

With an extended run, the project invites audiences to revisit the islands’ cultural memory and consider its relationship with present-day artistic production. It offers both residents and visitors a way to encounter perspectives on the evolution of contemporary art in the Azores.

The exhibition takes place on São Miguel at Arquipélago – Contemporary Arts Centre and remains open throughout the second half of 2026.
