About the route

Arquitetura da Água I links volcanic relief in Graciosa’s interior with the island’s history of water management. The start beside Caldeirinha de Pêro Botelho presents a small crater containing a deep volcanic shaft, introducing the way lava created cavities and influenced infiltration. The route then approaches Pico Timão, which reaches 398 metres and is associated with the most recent recognised eruption on the island.

On the descent to Praia, the walk encounters tanks, cisterns, washhouses, fountains and former clay pipes. These structures reveal solutions developed on an island where water availability demanded careful storage and distribution. Near the coast, a tidal well and remains connected with the former tile factory add different uses of the same resource. Praia Islet, an important place for seabirds, dominates the final view beside the bathing area. The route therefore moves between geology, everyday engineering and coast, showing how communities adapted settlement to natural conditions.

Arrival in Praia completes the story begun inland: water that was stored and distributed finds a final expression in the tidal well. Between crater and shore, the route presents solutions associated with very different conditions of relief and salinity, while the former tile works recalls another activity that depended on local materials and water.

Directions

Begin at Caldeirinha de Pêro Botelho, circling the crater only on the marked path, and continue towards Pico Timão. Descend while following the sequence of tanks, cisterns, washhouses, fountains and former clay pipes. In Praia, pass the tidal well and the area connected with the old tile factory, finishing beside the bathing area with a view of the islet. This is a linear walk, so arrange return transport. In Praia, follow the waymarks to the bathing area rather than stopping at the first water structure.

Safety

Do not approach the edge of Caldeirinha or attempt to enter the shaft, as volcanic ground may be unstable. Respect tanks, cisterns, pipes and other structures without climbing or touching fragile elements. Wear footwear with good grip on the descent and watch for traffic in settled areas. Observe seabirds and Praia Islet from a distance without causing disturbance.
