Fontinhas

Fontinhas is one of Terceira’s inland parishes, shaped by gentle slopes, rural lanes and the small springs that gave the place its name. It sits close to Praia da Vitória, yet feels quieter and more agricultural, with scattered houses, stone walls, pastureland and open views across the Ramo Grande countryside.

A good visit begins around À Igreja, the parish’s central area, where the scale is intimate and unhurried. Nearby local places such as Fontinha, Santo António, Cabouco and Canada do Pico reveal how the settlement follows the lower slopes, with roads and farm tracks still tied to water, fields and older rural movement.

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena is Fontinhas’ main heritage landmark. The devotion is old, and the present building reflects successive rebuilds in a community repeatedly affected by earthquakes and storms. For visitors, its value lies in its central presence, its layered memory and its continuing role in the parish feast.

The Hermitage of Santo António adds a smaller, more intimate note to the local religious heritage. Together with the old fountains and the view from Ladeira da Pena, it makes a short route best taken slowly, paying attention to stone details, water lines and the changing light over the fields.

The Império do Espírito Santo das Fontinhas is essential for understanding the parish’s cultural life. The Holy Spirit tradition remains strong here, with community meals and celebrations in the weeks after Easter. When a visit coincides with this season, Fontinhas is at its most social: Holy Spirit soups, alcatra, processions, music and local gathering.

Outside festival days, Fontinhas works as a rural pause between Terceira’s better-known stops. It is a worthwhile detour for local heritage, agricultural landscape photography and a slower reading of the island’s eastern side, without reducing the parish to a place simply passed through.
